Freelancing FAQs

How do you start freelance writing?

There are lots of ways to start freelance writing. One of the best ways is to use a freelance marketplace or a job board like ProBlogger or BloggingPro.

You can also reach out to people in your existing network, or use cold emailing to try and get clients. But these methods are generally quite time-consuming and not always very rewarding.

No matter how you start, you’ll ideally start getting more clients either through people finding you (on social media or on your own website) and through word-of-mouth referrals.

Do you need experience to become a freelance writer?

You don’t need experience to start freelance writing, but you will of course need to be a good writer! You also don’t need a degree.

You will need to create a portfolio of writing samples to show potential clients. And one of the best ways to create a free online writing portfolio is to create content on the blogging platform Medium.

Is it worth becoming a freelance writer?

Whether or not freelance writing is the right career path for you depends on your skills and unique situation. If you:

  • Love writing
  • Are pretty good at it
  • Are willing to take a fair bit of risk
  • Need some extra money
  • Want to carve out your own career path

Then freelance writing could be the perfect career for you!

But if you prefer to work as part of a large group in a traditional 9-5 job, or can’t afford to risk going through periods of income instability, freelance writing may not be the right choice.
