1. Decide What You’re Trying to Achieve

When you’re choosing your domain name, you want to find one that is both memorable and relevant to the nature of your business. Ideally, you should try to select a top level domain (TLD). These are domains that end in suffixes like .com or .net.

As a general rule, you want to buy a .com domain name as opposed to a .net domain name. However, as long as you get a TLD, you should be fine. 

You’ll quickly discover that many of the more ‘obvious’ domain names are already taken. So, you’ll have to be inventive to find something that is easy to remember, professional, and fits your business.

Most website building platforms give you the opportunity to purchase domain names with their hosting packages, or to get one for free. That means, to make things easier, you can just buy your domain name while you’re building your website. This is instead of buying it separately at a dedicated domain registrar and then manually migrating the domain to your new site.

Web hosting allows your website to remain live and is therefore an essential part of setting up any website. You can get a dedicated private hosting server for your website, but the costs are fairly prohibitive for beginners. That means it’s usually better to start with a shared hosting service that provides hosting for multiple websites on their servers.

Website builders usually offer hosting as part of their monthly packages, including Wix, WordPress and Squarespace. Your hosting service should also provide you with a free Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. This gives your site an encrypted connection between the server and the host. All websites that start with the ‘https’ prefix rather than ‘http’ have an SSL certificate. This is important to give your customers the confidence to shop securely on your site. They’ll see a padlock icon in the address bar in front of your domain name.

This might sound a little complicated, but it’s a basic requirement for a professional website. However, there’s no need to worry about the technical details as your hosting service should handle all of this on your behalf. You usually just need to tick a box!

4. Choose a Website Building Platform

Before you can start designing your website, you’ll have to select from the many website building platforms that are available online. These are usually very easy to use and have extensive free tutorials to guide you through the process of making your website. We’ll detail the basics of how to use the best platforms below.

5. Design and Create Your Site

Now that you’ve got the administrative details sorted out, you can get down to actually designing and building your website! Firstly, you’ll need to select a theme/template and the necessary plugins/integrations that will give your site the right functionality.

After you’ve chosen your theme, you need to add pages to your site which can later be modified to suit your business’ and your customers’ requirements. There are no strict rules about what pages you should have on your website. However, there are some that you will probably want to include.


This is the first page that many of your visitors will land on. It should clearly explain what your business does and help your potential customers to easily navigate to other relevant pages on your site.

About Page

This is where you can tell your audience about you, your business, your company ethos, and any other relevant information that lends you credibility and builds trust with potential customers.

Shop/Ecommerce Page

If you are selling products or services, you will need to have a dedicated page for this.

WordPress is easy to use, has an intuitive interface, free tutorials, and a good selection of hosting packages available to choose from.

There are a few different ways to make a website with WordPress, and they depend on which version of WordPress you choose. The general steps outlined below will apply to both versions, with a few exceptions. So, how do you make a website with WordPress?

1. Register With WordPress

To get started you need to fill out your name, email, password and other details on This will create a new account which you can use to make your site. The registration process is super easy and will only take a few moments.

Alternatively, you can download WordPress onto your site if you choose to use an external host (more on that in a minute). There’s usually an easy way to do this in the backend of your hosting provider. So, check their guides or contact their support team to find out how to do this. Regardless of which method you choose, the bulk of the steps below will remain the same.

2. Choose Your Domain Name

Next, you need to choose a domain name. Your domain name will help potential customers find your website and plays an important part in the overall branding of your business online. You can buy a domain name on WordPress under the ‘Domain’ section, which will guide you through the process.

You can also buy a domain name on a separate domain registrar, but it’s easy to use WordPress’ in-house options. If you sign up to an external host (see below) you may be able to choose a free or paid domain name through them.

3. Select a Hosting Provider

If you’ve decided to use WordPress’ hosting services to host your site, then you just need to choose one of the available packages that start at around £3/$4 a month. There are also more extensive options which cost a little more. In terms of which type of web hosting is right for you, it will really depend on what you need for your specific website. 

However, for your first business website, the basic package should be absolutely fine. And don’t forget, you can always upgrade it later if you need to. Most of the plans offer a good range of additional security features, add-ons and plugins that deliver plenty of functionality for your business’ website.

You’ll have to fill out the forms by following the onscreen instructions and then agree to the terms of service to continue setting up your website.

External Hosting

You can also go the external hosting route. This means signing up for an external host, choosing a plan, and then integrating WordPress onto your site through the host. This is usually very easy, and you’ll be guided through the process with most good hosts. Once again, we recommend Hostinger. Their WordPress installation procedure is super quick, and they offer very affordable hosting plans.

Note that if you do this, you won’t need to pay for any use of WordPress. Instead, you’ll effectively be installing onto your website, rather than using for hosting. 4. Choose a Theme

WordPress is famous for its vast selection of themes, and there are thousands to choose from. You can either get a paid theme or a free one. The free themes are great and should be able to handle any functionality you need for your business website. However, as with the hosting packages, you can upgrade the theme later to a Premium version if you need to.

Our favourite theme is Astra. You can choose from lots of starter templates to speed up the website building process even more, which is great for beginners. There’s a free version and a pro version too, and we recommend starting with the free version to see if it’s right for you before upgrading. Before you install a theme, you can preview it first to see if you like the way it looks.

5. Customise Your Website and Theme

Before you start to customise your site, take a few minutes to learn your way around the WordPress dashboard. This won’t take long, but it will save you a lot of time later. There are a lot of tutorials on YouTube and on the WordPress platform itself to help you find your way around.

Once you’ve started to figure out how to use the WordPress dashboard it’s time to start customising. You can change your theme’s colours and add images, forms, and tables. You can also start to create blog posts. You can install plugins and other useful features that make your website more functional and improve the user experience for your visitors.

6. Publish Your New Website

Now that you’ve customised your site, added some blog posts, and are happy with the way it’s looking, you can preview the site before hitting publish! After you’ve published your site, take a few minutes to click through all the different pages and links to make sure they’re all working properly.

You should also check that the website shows up correctly on different devices. WordPress should already have formatted the pages correctly. You can choose to build a free site too, but you’ll be limited with many features, and you won’t get a fully customised domain name. 

There are thousands of free WordPress tutorials out there too. So, if you’re new to website design you can get up to speed quite quickly. This makes WordPress the best for those with very little experience in web design. But it’s also great for those that have some experience and want a massive amount of customisation at their fingertips.

Wix is an easy to use drag-and-drop style website builder. It allows you to quickly put together a basic website for your business without you needing to learn any coding. While not as popular or as customisable as WordPress, Wix still provides a solid platform for designing websites, with secure hosting and built-in domain registration services.

1. Create an Account

Firstly, you’ll need to register with Wix and create a new account. The process is easy and only takes a few minutes. You’ll be able to choose between the Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) tool or the more customisable template editor.

If you’ve never done any web design and are nervous about diving into the customisation options, the ADI tool might be a great option. However, you shouldn’t be put off taking a more active role in the design process. As you gain more experience, you can start customising things further.

2. Select a Package and Pricing Plan

You can set up a Wix account for free. However, you won’t have your own domain, which can look amateurish and lower your credibility among your site’s visitors. Wix will also display ads on your site with this and the cheapest “Connect Domain” plan. However, you can upgrade that account to a ‘Combo’ or ‘Unlimited Account’, which are designed for entrepreneurs. These give you a free domain name and a hosting package for around £10/$18 per month, depending on which one you choose.

3. Choose a Template

To get started with designing your website, you need to choose a template to use the Wix Editor functions. You can start to narrow down the Wix themes by category and preview each of the templates in a demonstration mode before you make your selection.

Once you’re happy with a theme you can select ‘Edit’ to start customising your site’s design. The editing process is very intuitive and is based on a simple drag-and-drop method. You can change the colours, add text, and add images to get your site looking the way you want.

4. Use Settings to Further Customise Your Site

Now that you’ve got the basic template and theme set up, you can further customise your website by heading into the ‘Settings’ section. This gives you a lot of scope for fine-tuning your website so that it fares better in terms of SEO and provides a better user experience.

Within the settings you can add metadata to each page of your website to help boost your rankings in the search engines. This is crucial to get right if you’re entering the competitive ecosystem of ecommerce. You can also add social media share options.

Wix is a good all-round website building platform that has an easy-to-use interface. Although it has been somewhat overshadowed by competitors like WordPress, it’s still a great choice for a beginner website creator.


How to Make a Website for a Business With Squarespace

This do-it-yourself website builder is a great tool for creating blogs or ecommerce websites. Squarespace features an easy to navigate hosting service and a simple drag-and-drop user interface. Squarespace also has useful management tools where you can check on visitor statistics and adjust your ecommerce settings once your site is online.

1. Select a Template

To get started you just need to click on the ‘Get Started’ button on the Squarespace website and then select a template you like. Squarespace will give you some recommendations to help you narrow down your search. You can choose from categories such as templates for businesses, shops and restaurants, creative portfolios and more.

Once you find a template that you like, you can click ‘Live Preview’ to see how it will look once your site is up and running.

2. Create a Free Account

Now that you’ve selected a template you need to click on the ‘Start with this Design’ button. This will let you begin to create and personalise your website. Before you can start, Squarespace will ask you to fill in your basic details to create a free account.

After you’ve made your account, you can watch a short tutorial video that runs through the basics you need to know to build your site. Following the video, you can either choose to keep the template as it is or remove it and build your site from scratch. If this is your first time making a website, it’s probably a good idea to use the template as a guide.

You can add new pages, change colours, add graphics and multimedia, and link to your social media and any other online shops or websites you already own.

Squarespace is a very intuitive platform, and it uses a simple drag-and-drop interface. So, it’s quick and easy to use, and you don’t need any prior experience. The Personal plan starts at £10/$12 per month. Although it’s limited in functionality, you get a free domain and plenty of bandwidth. Alternatively, you can select the Business account. This is Squarespace’s most popular choice and it comes in at £15/$18 per month.

5. Publish Your Site

Once you’ve chosen a plan you can publish your website. Once it’s live, you can go back and make changes as your business develops and, if necessary, you can always upgrade your package if you need more features in the future.

Who Is Squarespace Best for?

Squarespace is a solid website building platform that is great for small businesses, beginners and seasoned entrepreneurs. The prices on the site are reasonable and the available features are easy to use to increase your reach and grow your customer base.

Squarespace is great for a first-time website builder, and with its simple interface you can get a basic website online within a few hours. Overall, the platform has good functionality and will deliver what you need to set up your first site. However, in terms of outright customisation, it doesn’t have nearly as much as WordPress.


How to Make a Website for a Business With Shopify

Shopify is one of the best purpose-built ecommerce website builders that serves more than 1,000,000 merchants in 170+ countries. The platform is secure, easy to manage, and it accepts a wide range of currencies.

1. Set Up Your Account

To get started on Shopify you just need to select ‘Start free trial’ and fill in your basic details, including your name, email and password. Then you can choose the name of your store. 

2. Complete the Getting Started Wizard Questionnaire

After you’ve signed up for your account, you then need to fill in a short questionnaire that will help Shopify select the correct defaults for your website. For instance, you will be asked about the size of your business, the type of industry that you work in, and whether or not you’re already selling products elsewhere.

3. Start Adding Your Products

Now that you have established the basics, it’s time to start adding your products to your website. To add products, just click on the ‘Products’ option. You can add a title, a unique description and images of the item. 5. Delivery Options

It’s important that you set the correct delivery options for your store. To do this you need to select ‘Shipping and Delivery’ under ‘Settings’, where you can set the delivery options that will be available to your customers when they are at the checkout. How to Make a Website for a Business With Zyro

Zyro is a new player in the website building market, launching in 2019. It allows users to create a functioning website in a matter of hours using customisable templates, and is quickly growing its user base.

To get started you just click the ‘Start Now’ button on and enter your details. Press ‘Continue’ and proceed to ‘Create Account’.

2. Select a Template

Once you’ve created your account, you need to choose between three options. You can either use a template, import an existing website, or use Zyro’s AI generator. It’s worth noting that the option to import another website is still in beta testing. However, its functionality is still fairly impressive and will only improve over time.

The AI generator allows you to enter a range of information about the type of website that you want to build. Then, the Zyro generator will make a series of templates that you can choose from.
